Complete Inspection Checklists

Ensure your abutment meets all structural and safety requirements.

πŸ“‹ Inspection Overview

βœ… Three Critical Inspection Points

  1. Pre-Pour Foundation - Before base concrete
  2. Pre-Pour Wall - Before wall concrete
  3. Final Inspection - Before loading bridge

πŸ” Inspection #1: Pre-Pour Foundation

Timing: Before pouring base slab concrete
Inspector: Self or building inspector
Duration: 30-60 minutes

Foundation Checklist

Excavation & Bearing Soil

Pass Criteria: Firm soil that forms a ball when squeezed but isn’t muddy

AB3 Aggregate Base

Pass Criteria: Compaction test documentation showing 95%+ (REQUIRED!)

Ground Anchors

Pass Criteria: All anchors at correct depth and spacing

Base Slab Rebar

Pass Criteria: Use cover meter or measure - 3” minimum cover is CRITICAL

Bearing Plates

Pass Criteria: Laser level shows plates at exact same elevation Β±1/16”

Drainage Pipes

Pass Criteria: 2% minimum slope confirmed with level

  2. AB3 installation (during compaction)
  3. Ground anchors installed
  4. Base rebar grid (before pour)
  5. Bearing plates positioned

Wall Stage:

  1. Base after 7-day cure
  2. Wall rebar installed
  3. Forms erected and braced
  4. During wall pour
  5. Wall after form removal

Final Stage:

  1. Completed abutment (all angles)
  2. Bearing plates (close-up)
  3. Drainage outlets
  4. Overall site conditions

⚠️ Common Inspection Failures

Top 10 Reasons Abutments Fail Inspection

❌ #1: Insufficient Concrete Cover

Required: 3" minimum
Common mistake: Using wood blocks instead of proper chairs
Fix: Remeasure before pour, use correct height chairs

❌ #2: Poor AB3 Compaction

Required: 95% Modified Proctor
Common mistake: No compaction test
Fix: Hire testing company ($100-200)

❌ #3: Bearing Plates Misaligned

Required: Exact position Β±1/4"
Common mistake: Not using laser level
Fix: Rent laser level, measure three times

❌ #4: Inadequate Lap Splices

Required: 6" minimum into base
Common mistake: Verticals not lapped enough
Fix: Ensure 6" lap before wall pour

❌ #5: Premature Loading

Required: 14 days minimum cure
Common mistake: Loading after 7 days
Fix: Wait for test cylinders, minimum 14 days
